In these times of grief, shock and anger, we need to remind ourselves, now more than ever, of the universal values that bind so many of us: peace, freedom, equal rights, social progress and human dignity, regardless of race, religion, gender or who you love. As human beings, I do not believe we are separated by color or religion or gender or nationality- but we are separated from those who believe they have a right to take an innocent life. The Paris attacks have affected many of us because they seem "closer to home", but that obscures the fact that whether the attack takes place in Paris, in Beirut, in the skies over the Sinai, in New York, in Ankara or in Bagdad- each life lost to this evil is equally reprehensible. Let us pledge to each other that this and similar events with strengthen our resolve to come closer together, not move farther apart.
